About the event

The "Burn Your Socks Sail" tradition is a lighthearted maritime custom that originated in Annapolis, Maryland, in the late 1970s. It involves participants symbolically burning old winter socks to mark the end of cold weather and celebrate the arrival of spring and the Chesapeake Bay boating season. The custom began as a defiant gesture by boatbuilder Bob Turner, who gathered colleagues to toss their socks into a fire after a harsh winter. Over the years, it has evolved into an annual ritual celebrated around the Vernal Equinox, often featuring events like oyster roasts and live music, and has spread to various marinas and yacht clubs across the region.
